Dep. Emergency Management Coordinator Mark Richards

The Office of Emergency Management (O.E.M.) is responsible for the planning and coordination of activities during natural and man-made disasters and emergencies. Operating under our Emergency Operation Plan, O.E.M. coordinates the activities of the different emergency service units and any other agencies that might be involved during a large-scale incident. An emergency incident can strike anytime or anywhere. It may be an act of nature, such as a weather emergency, or it may be a utility, hazardous material, fire, or health emergency. Unfortunately in today’s world, it may even be an act of terrorism. We must be prepared for it all. Bergenfield residents can be assured that, locally, the Bergenfield Office of Emergency is hard at work and keeping abreast of new development and information.

Started in the 1950’s when the Civil Defense Act was signed into law, Emergency Management has evolved to its present state utilizing an all-hazards approach in managing all emergencies through mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.

In our borough, we have an emergency telephone notification system available, commonly referred to as Reverse911. At the time of a local emergency, this system will call all affected borough residents on their telephone and deliver a short, recorded message. It will also leave a message on an answering machine. If there is no answer or the line is busy it will call back up to 4 times. We have the availability of listed and unlisted numbers. This database is periodically updated, but with the frequent changes of phone numbers, we ask the public to contact our office with any changes. We can also manually add cell phone numbers to the system database. The office can be reached at 201-387-4000, option 5, or via e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
