by Dave Volpe, Bergenfield Health Officer There is only one type of rat that you will find in Bergen County, and that is the Norway rat (which isn't from Norway either!). The size of this rodent is often exaggerated due to many people's fear of rats. Norway rats do not grow "as large as a cat." If you see an animal that size, you are probably looking at an opossum or a muskrat. |

The Bergenfield Police Department Traffic Bureau would like to advise motorist that on or about April 15, 2009 the New Bridge Road Bridge which is located between Windsor Rd and Woodbine St. will be closed for approximately four months to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. According to Traffic Lieutenant Thomas Yurkin, this County project must be completed as the culvert is failing and needs immediate attention. Detour signs will be erected in order for motorists to navigate through the area. The detour route will increase traffic on S. Washington Ave., Woodbine St., Windsor Rd., W. Clinton Ave. and S. Prospect Ave. Yurkin added. Motorists have the choice of utilizing W. Clinton Ave or the State St. Bridge in Teaneck in order to avoid the project location. Motorists should allow additional time when traveling in these areas of town. Local businesses on New Bridge Road will remain open as this project will not require roads to be closed effecting any businesses. Motorist will still be able to drive to a business on New Bridge Road, they just have to detour around the closed bridge. Once completed, not only will the new bridge be a benefit but the addition of an eastbound lane from Windsor Road to the entrance of Pathmark allowing motorists to travel directly into the Pathmark lot. The project also calls for new traffic signals at the intersection of New Bridge Road and Windsor Rd. providing a safer intersection for pedestrians Yurkin explained. As more information is received regarding this road closure, the Borough website will be updated. Motorist requiring any additional information should contact the Bergenfield Police Department Traffic Bureau at 201-387-4000. Lt. Thomas Yurkin Traffic Supervisor Bergenfield Police Department 201-387-4000 Ext. 4008 |

During my political campaign, many of you asked what we planned to do in order to improve services and the quality of life in Bergenfield. After more than a year as Mayor I will repeat what I said then. There is no magic bullet that will turn Bergenfield into a utopia. There is no single event that will correct what each of us may feel are our most significant problems. Unfortunately, there is no single action we can take that will significantly reduce our taxes; we can only attempt to slow their growth. Bergenfield provides more services than most of the surrounding communities and no one has suggested that we eliminate any of them. People are generally satisfied with what we presently have. However, costs for all borough operations such as electric power, fuel, insurance, salaries, sewer charges and trash disposal continue to rise. Nothing cost less today than in the past. So essentially, we are left with a very limited number of options which we intend to pursue. While many of you are dealing with the financial status of our nation and the impact of a recession, those are matters to be resolved by Washington, yet they do have a profound impact on the well being of our community. An individual's loss of a job or an increase in a monthly mortgage due to an interest rate resetting can have a serious impact on the lives of our citizens and make their property tax bill a major burden. A recession could shrink the state economy to the point where state tax collections are reduced leaving less for future state aid to the borough as well as to the school system. All this may sound like the future is bleak but it's not. It presents us with challenges which we can overcome if we join together and work for the good of our community. I think we will all be surprised at what we can accomplish. I encourage each of you to contact us with your concerns and your suggestions. This is your community and your government. It needs and welcomes your help. I look forward to hearing from you. |
